Ivan Harding Stowers Sr., (affectionately nicknamed “Barney”), 88, of Rudd Road, passed away Monday, October 13, 2008, at Euclid Hospital.

He was born on August 28, 1920, the son of Isaac H. and Molly (Umbarger) Stowers and had been a life long Ashtabula resident.

Ivan was a retired locomotive railroad engineer. His 41 year career began on steam engines and spanned three railroads; New York Central, Penn Central and ConRail.

He was a member of the Ashtabula Seventh Day Adventist Church. Ivan and his wife Betty of 68 years enjoyed traveling to nearly every state in the Continental U.S. and camping, which included three trips to Alaska and 26 years of wintering in Florida.

Ivan loved being with his friends and family. He also loved to spend time with his cat, Toby. He enjoyed cars, riding motorcycles, guns, hunting, and raising champion beagles. His wonderful sense of humor and quick wit endeared him to everyone who knew him.

He is dearly cherished and missed by his family: his wife Elizabeth “Betty” (Bender) whom he married August 28, 1940; four children, Patricia (Stan) Kohut of Ft. Myers, FL, Nancy (Ron) Leonard of Saybrook, Davey (Patsy) Stowers of Ashtabula, and Ivan Stowers Jr. of Ashtabula; seven grandchildren, Kristy, Stan Jr., Jeff, Jenifer, Katherine, James, and Rana; and 16 great-grand children.

Ivan was preceded in death by his son, Dale J. Stowers; one sister; six brothers; and his parents.

A calling hour will be held on Friday, October 17, 2008 from 12:30 PM until 1:30 PM at the Zaback-Ducro Funeral Home, 500 West Prospect Road, Ashtabula. Services will follow at 1:30 PM with Pastor Tihomir Brechelmacher of the Seventh Day Adventist Church officiating. Burial will be in Saybrook Cemetery.
